11/23/2008 Aaron and I were able to attend a humanitarian trip that was through Aaron's school. We went to Tijuana, Mexico for a quick eye care trip. Basically what we did is we set up what instruments we had and were able to bring down there with us and saw as many people as we could to fit them for glasses and give them eye exams.
Each person had to go through 4 rooms. In the first room we had the patients read an eye chart and get a rough estimate on their vision and determine weather they had trouble seeing far away or up close or both. They would then go to the next room for the pre-testing and in that room we did the puff test and the autorefractor to get a better idea of their prescription. Then the doctor and anyone else who wanted to looked in the patients eyes to look for any abnormalities or other eye conditions. They would then proceed to the third room where two or three people would build each persons prescription on a trial frame and then trial shoot it until they could get the prescription as close as possible. Then they went to the last room which was the dispensing room. There they could choose a frame that they liked or one they kind of liked. We would then get a few eye measurements and tell them in very rough spanish (well rough for me, Aaron can do pretty well) that they can come pick up their glasses at the first of January. Dr. Leonard decided to have a guy who lives in Mexico make the glasses rather than bring them back home to make them. So when the glasses are done Dr. Leonard will go back down and distribute them to the people.

The first night they we got there we were able to go stop at some of the shops and see the beach. Our tour guide was Frank. He is such a funny guy. Tijuana is a pretty big city and the roads are little strange there. When ever we needed to go somewhere Frank would have to come in his truck and drive in front of us to lead us so that we wouldn't get lost.

That is such a cool idea. Who would've thunk ... you hear about other humanitarian trips for medical, but not really EYE. I'm glad you got to go and it seemed you enjoyed it, too!!!
